Marian devotions in the United Kingdom
Before the Reformation, England was called the Dote de Maria (Dowry of Mary), so deep was his Marian devotion. That treasure, which was destroyed in the 16th century, has again blossomed: Walsinghamthe "Nazareth of England"; Aylesford, cradle of the scapular of Carmen; gruta de Carfin in Scotland; and Cardigan, National Shrine of Wales. We pick them up by nations.
🌹 Marian wonders and anecdotes from the United Kingdom
The "Dowry of Mary" that rose from the ashes of the Reformation:
- Walsingham - according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to Lady Richeldis in 1061 asking her to reproduce the Holy House of Nazareth; thus was born the "Nazareth of England," the goal of kings and pilgrims until Henry VIII destroyed it, and restored in the 20th century.
- Aylesford - the English Carmelite Simon Stock is attributed to the vision of the Virgin by giving him the scapular of Carmen in 1251.
- Ladyewell (Fernyhalgh) - Catholic families kept alive their sacred well and devotion during centuries of persecution: one of the few almost uninterrupted Marian shrines in England.
- Cardigan - its image, with a cirium on (the Tape), was found according to tradition in the Estuary of the Teifi; St. John Paul II enthroned it as a national image of Wales in 1982.
- Penrhys - medieval sanctuary linked to an image that, according to tradition, appeared in a tree; today a great statue of the Virgin dominates the Rhondda valley.
- Carfin - the "Scottish Lourdes," great grotto created by Father Thomas Taylor in the early 20th century.
