The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary in Blaj, built in 1752, is the spiritual center of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. The sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Cacica, Bucovina, and the chapel of the Virgin of Perpetual Relief in Iasi are important Marian centers. Romania has a tradition of painted churches, such as those of Bucovina, where the representations of the Virgin Mary are protagonists of the exterior frescoes. The Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church in Romania, is invoked as a protector of the Romanian people in the moments of proof of their history.
