Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The mule that chose the Virgin's house

Oaxacan tradition tells that, at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century, a mule train arrived in the city. Among them was one without a known muleteer, carrying a mysterious crate. As they passed through the neighborhood where the sanctuary now stands, the mule suddenly collapsed and died, and no one wanted to take responsibility for the orphaned cargo. When they finally opened the crate, they found inside an image of the Virgin Mary. The people understood immediately: the Mother herself had chosen that place to be venerated, and there her temple was built.
It's worth saying with affection and honesty: this tale of the mule and the crate is a beautiful founding legend. The details change from one version to another—the date, who found the image, whether it was a Christ figure and the Virgin was carved later—and this very variability shows that we are dealing with popular piety and not a notarial record. The specific episode is not found in town hall archives or accessible notarial records.
What is firmly documented is the essential fact: the city of Oaxaca was founded in 1532, and by the beginning of the 17th century, a sorrowful Marian image, Our Lady of Solitude at the Foot of the Cross, already existed there, an object of strong devotion. This devotion motivated the construction of a grand temple, the current Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude, built between the 17th and 18th centuries; the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is studying its Baroque façade in green quarry stone as heritage from the viceregal period. The Virgin is today "Mother, Queen, and Patroness of the people of Oaxaca," intimately linked to the music, festivals, and memory of that community. Her main feast day is December 18, with solemn masses, processions, and traditional music.
As Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Solitude is spontaneously associated in Mexican piety with the meditation on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, which is prayed naturally in her basilica. However, there is no record of a decree or Rosary confraternity that legally defines the identity of this sanctuary: the connection is that of ordinary Marian devotion, not that of a formal Rosary foundation.
