Perched atop a rocky outcrop approximately 154 meters high, overlooking Vitória and Vila Velha in the state of Espírito Santo, stands the Convento da Penha, one of Brazil's oldest Marian shrines. There, Nossa Senhora da Penha, patron saint of the state, is venerated under a title of European origin, linked to an image found or venerated on a "rock."

The documented history has one protagonist: the Franciscan friar Frei Pedro Palácios, a Spaniard, who settled in the region in the mid-16th century and initiated the devotion there. In 1570, a few days before his death, he organized the first Festa da Penha (Festival of Our Lady of Penha). That festival has not been interrupted: today it is the oldest living Marian festival in Brazil, with more than four and a half centuries of history and crowds numbering in the millions. In 1630, a papal bull from Pope Urban VIII proclaimed Our Lady of Penha the patron saint of the state.

Let us distinguish between tradition and history. The devotion is often explained by invoking the European monk Simón Vela, who in the 15th century is said to have dreamt of the Virgin Mary atop a crag and found an image there; but that story is the remote, European origin of the title, a pious tradition, not an event that occurred in Espírito Santo. Similarly, the moving custom of climbing part of the path on one's knees as a vow of penance or gratitude is attested to in reports and testimonies from devotees, but it is not recorded as an official rite of the sanctuary: it is a popular practice, different for each vow.

The sanctuary preserves a "Hall of Miracles" filled with votive offerings, and the local press has collected firsthand accounts of healings, protection, and favors attributed to Our Lady of Penha. Regarding the Rosary, official sources highlight masses, pilgrimages, and the Hall of Miracles, but do not emphasize a confraternity or a specific Rosary devotion; the recitation of the Rosary is present, as in almost all major sanctuaries, in novenas and pilgrimages, without any record of a founding event linked to it.
