Marian Advocations of Lithuania
Lithuania, the last country in Europe to embrace Christianity, is today a particularly Marian land. In the Puerta de la Aurora de Vilna venerates the Mother of Mercy, image without the Child loved by Lithuanians, Poles and Orthodox; in Siluva The Virgin appeared crying in 1608, the first Marian apparition of Europe recognized by the Church; and the Virgin of Trakai, patron of Lithuania, was the first image crowned with papal crown outside Italy. Marian Wonders and Anecdotes of Lithuania
The first apparition of Europe and a Mother venerated by three confessions:
- Siluva - in 1608 the Virgin appeared crying on a rock to some shepherds, saying she was crying because there no longer worshipped her Son: it is the first Marian apparition of Europe recognized by the Church.
- Puerta de la Aurora (Vilna) - The Mother of Mercy, an image without the Child; in 1671 she had seventeen miracles confirmed under oath. It is venerated equally by Lithuanian, Polish and Orthodox Catholics.
- Trakai - patron of Lithuania; in 1718 it was the first Marian image crowned with papal crown outside Italy.
- Žemaičių Kalvarija - In his pilgrimages, the Calvary is used to sing the "Montes de Samogitia," a unique sung tradition.
- The Rosary - his prayer was kept in hiding throughout the Soviet occupation.
