Marian Advocations of the Murcia Region
The Murcia Region keeps very deep Marian devotions, from the Charity of Cartagena to the Rock Hope of Calasparra, from the gardens of Lorca to the Virgin of the Castle of Yecla.
History of Marian devotion in the Region of Murcia
The Region of Murcia, the former Kingdom of Murcia, has a rich Marian tradition that sinks its roots in the Middle Ages, when Alfonso X the Wise conquers these lands and I redeem the territory with Christian inhabitants from Aragon, Cataluna and Castile. The Arab footprint on the Marian toponymy - Arrixaca, Almudevar, Algezar - recalls the cultural mestización of this border land.
Each of these sanctuaries represents the devotion of a region, of a people, of a community that has entrusted to Mary its allegries and its sorrows over the centuries. The Holy Bat Week, declared of International Tourist Interest, is also an explosion of Marian piety, with its famous processions and its images of the Virgin of the Dolores, Soledad and Hope.

The present baroque-style sanctuary was built in the 17th century. The image is a Gothic size of the 14th century, 60 centimetres, sitting with the Ninyo on the lap.
