Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Caravaggio's Fountain: The Virgin who asked for peace by the spring"

In Caravaggio, in the Lombard province of Bergamo, the Madonna di Caravaggio is venerated in the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte, whose very name recalls the origin of the devotion: a spring, a fountain. Local tradition places the heart of the story there, in the middle of the plain, where the water sprang forth as a sign of the Virgin's presence.
Traditional accounts tell of the Virgin Mary appearing to Giannetta de' Vacchi, a local woman, on May 26, 1432, by the spring, with a message of peace, prayer, and penance. From then on, the spring became a sacred site and gave rise to the sanctuary that still draws numerous pilgrims today.
We must be honest here. The existence of the sanctuary and the antiquity of the devotion are certain, but the available research sources do not offer critical documentation of Caravaggio's original account, so it is best not to assert more than is certain: the date of 1432, the apparition to Giannetta, and the miraculous nature of the spring belong, as transmitted, to the realm of local tradition and devotional memory, while the establishment of the sanctuary came later.
Regarding the Rosary, the sources consulted do not establish a direct link between Caravaggio's Madonna and this prayer. The devotion is clearly Marian and deeply rooted in popular tradition, and the Rosary is prayed there as in any shrine, but asserting a specific connection would require a concrete local source, which is not found here.
