Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Vienna 1683: Sobieski's Charge and the Holy Name of Mary"
In the summer of 1683, the Ottoman Empire laid siege to Vienna, the Habsburg capital. Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa besieged the city in July, and Vienna resisted with enormous difficulty while Emperor Leopold I sought help from the Pope and the Christian princes. A coalition was formed, led by John III Sobieski, King of Poland-Lithuania, along with Charles V of Lorraine and other imperial, Polish, and Bavarian commanders.
On September 12, 1683, the decisive battle was fought on Kahlenberg Hill. Sobieski arrived with his cavalry, including the famous Winged Hussars, and led one of the greatest charges in military history, breaking the Ottoman lines and liberating the city. It was the final halt to Ottoman expansion in Central Europe.
Following the victory, Pope Innocent XI interpreted it as a special grace from God and the Virgin Mary, and extended the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary to the entire Latin Church in thanksgiving for the liberation of Vienna, fixing it on September 12, the day of the battle. Devotion to the Holy Name of Mary already existed in Spain, where it is believed to have been celebrated for the first time in Cuenca in 1531. It is important to distinguish between documented facts: the siege, the Battle of Kahlenberg, and Innocent XI's decision. However, the specific details of Sobieski's prayers the night before, or the phrase attributed to him, "Venimus, vidimus, Deus vicit" ("We came, we saw, God conquered"), belong to tradition. This phrase is widely circulated, but not unanimously confirmed by critical editions.
The connection to the Rosary here is indirect and precious. The great precedent is Lepanto (1571), whose victory was explicitly attributed to the recitation of the Rosary, giving rise to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This mentality of "Christian victory associated with Mary" illuminated the Viennese interpretation. In Vienne, the emphasis is more on the Holy Name of Mary and on Polish devotion to Częstochowa; but the feast of the Holy Name harmonizes very well with the Rosary, which repeats the Name of Jesus and the Name of Mary in each Hail Mary.
