Prayers to the Virgin Mary
The Virgin Mary holds a unique place in the life of the Church. She is the Mother of Jesus, Mother of God and our Mother. For this reason, we Christians turn to her with filial trust, not to take the place of God, but to ask for her intercession and to learn from her how to love Jesus Christ more.
On this page you will find a collection of traditional Marian prayers: the Hail Mary, the Angelus, the Regina Caeli, the Salve Regina, the Memorare, the Sub Tuum Praesidium, litanies, consecrations, novenas and prayers to various titles of the Virgin.

Salve Regina
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement,
O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.
Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;
vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Hevae.
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.
Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Maagd Maria.
Sub Tuum Praesidium (We fly to thy protection)
We fly to thy protection,
O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions
in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Amen.
Sub tuum praesidium confugimus,
sancta Dei Genetrix;
nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus,
sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper,
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta.
Amen.
The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help
or sought thy intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.
Blessed be thy purity
Blessed be thy purity,
and may it ever be so,
for all our God himself delights
in such surpassing grace and beauty.
To thee, O heavenly Princess,
Holy Virgin Mary,
I offer on this day
my soul, my life and my heart.
Look upon me with compassion;
do not leave me, my Mother.
Amen.
O my Lady, O my Mother
O my Lady, O my Mother,
I offer myself entirely to thee;
and in proof of my filial affection
I consecrate to thee this day
my eyes, my ears, my tongue and my heart;
in a word, my whole being.
Since I am all thine own,
O Mother of goodness,
keep me and defend me
as thy property and possession.
Amen.
Sweet Mother, do not depart
Sweet Mother, do not depart,
turn not thy gaze away from me;
come with me wherever I go
and never leave me alone.
Since thou dost protect me so
as a true Mother,
obtain for me the blessing of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The Three Hail Marys
Mary, my Mother;
keep me from falling into mortal sin.
By the power that the Eternal Father granted thee:
Hail Mary…
By the wisdom that the Son granted thee:
Hail Mary…
By the love that the Holy Spirit granted thee:
Hail Mary…
Amen.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and life everlasting.
Amen.

but deliver us from evil.

Consecrations to the Virgin Mary
To consecrate oneself to Mary is to give oneself to Jesus through her hands: to place oneself under her maternal protection in order to live more closely united to Christ.
Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary
O my Lady, O my Mother,
I offer myself entirely to thee;
and in proof of my filial affection
I consecrate to thee this day
my eyes, my ears, my tongue and my heart;
in a word, my whole being.
Since I am all thine own,
O Mother of goodness,
keep me and defend me
as thy property and possession.
Amen.
Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
O Mary, Virgin most powerful and Mother of mercy,
Queen of heaven and Refuge of sinners:
we consecrate ourselves to your Immaculate Heart.
We consecrate to you our being and our whole life:
all that we have, all that we love, all that we are.
To you our bodies, our hearts and our souls;
to you our homes, our families and our country.
We desire that all that is within us and around us
may belong to you and share in the benefits of your maternal blessing.
Amen.
Consecration to Jesus through Mary (Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, short form)
I choose you this day, O Mary,
in the presence of all the heavenly court,
for my Mother and Queen.
I deliver and consecrate to you, in all submission and love,
my body and my soul,
my interior and exterior goods,
and even the value of my good actions,
past, present and to come,
leaving to you the entire and full right
of disposing of me and all that belongs to me,
without exception, according to your good pleasure,
for the greater glory of God,
in time and in eternity.
Amen.
Family consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
O Virgin Mary!
To your Immaculate Heart we consecrate today our home
and all who dwell in it.
May our house be like that of Nazareth,
a dwelling of peace and happiness,
through the fulfillment of the will of God,
through the practice of charity
and through perfect abandonment to Divine Providence.
Watch over all who dwell in it,
help them to live as Christians,
cover them with your maternal protection,
and deign, O gracious Virgin Mary,
to form anew in Heaven this home
that on earth belongs entirely to your Immaculate Heart.
Amen.
Consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
O Mary, Queen and Mother of Carmel!
I come today to consecrate myself to you,
for my whole life is but a small tribute
for so many graces and benefits
that I have received from God through your hands.
And because you look with eyes of special benevolence
upon those who wear your scapular,
I beg you to sustain my frailty with your strength,
to enlighten with your wisdom the darkness of my mind,
and to increase in me faith, hope and charity.
May the holy scapular draw upon me your merciful gaze;
may it be for me a pledge of your special protection in the struggles of each day,
and may it constantly remind me of my duty to think of you
and to clothe myself in your virtues.
From this day forward I will strive to live in gentle union with your spirit,
to offer everything to Jesus through you
and to make my life an image of your humility, charity,
patience, meekness and spirit of prayer.
O most loving Mother! Sustain me with your love,
so that to me, an unworthy sinner, it may one day be granted
to exchange your scapular for the eternal nuptial garment
and to dwell with you and with the saints of Carmel
in the kingdom of your Son. Amen.
Consecration to Our Lady of Fátima
O Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy most powerful,
Queen of Heaven and Earth:
according to your wish made known at Fátima,
I consecrate myself today to your Immaculate Heart.
I entrust to you all that I have, all that I am.
Reign over me, dear Mother,
that I may be yours in prosperity and in adversity,
in joy and in sorrow,
in health and in sickness,
in life and in death.
Compassionate Heart of Mary, Queen of Virgins,
watch over my mind and my heart
and preserve me from all that stains the soul.
I want to be pure as you are.
I want to make reparation for the many offenses committed against Jesus and against you.
I want to call down upon my country and the whole world
the peace of God in justice and charity.
Mindful of this consecration,
I promise to strive to imitate you
through the practice of the Christian virtues.
I resolve to receive Holy Communion
on the first Saturday of each month, whenever possible,
and to pray the Rosary every day,
with my sacrifices, in a spirit of penance and reparation.
Amen.

O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of the true God and Mother of the Church!
You, who from this place reveal your clemency and your compassion
to all who seek your protection:
hear the prayer that with filial trust we address to you,
and present it before your Son Jesus, our one Redeemer.
Mother of mercy, Teacher of hidden and silent sacrifice:
to you, who come out to meet us sinners,
we consecrate on this day our whole being and all our love.
We also consecrate to you our life, our work,
our joys, our infirmities and our sorrows.
Grant peace, justice and prosperity to our peoples,
for all that we have and are

and to walk with you the path of full fidelity to Jesus Christ in his Church:
do not let go of us from your loving hand.
Amen.
Consecration to Mary Help of Christians (Saint John Bosco)

You, the great and glorious defender of the Church;
you, Help of the Christian people;

you, who alone destroy the errors of the world:
defend us in our distress,
aid us in our struggles,
help us in our needs,
and at the hour of death
receive us into eternal joy.
Amen.
As a personal consecration the «O my Lady, O my Mother» (see Essential prayers) may be added, which Saint John Bosco recommended to his young people.

O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate:
we offer and consecrate ourselves to you,
under the title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal,
with our body, our heart, our soul
and all our spiritual and temporal goods.
Grant that this Medal may be for each of us
a sure sign of your affection
and an enduring reminder of our duties toward you.
And as we wear your Medal,
may your kindly protection always guide us
and keep us in the grace of your divine Son.
O most powerful Virgin, Mother of our Savior:
keep us united to you in every moment of our life,
and obtain for all of us, your children, the grace of a happy death,

O Mother and most gracious Virgin of the Rosary!
You who planted in the Church,
through your privileged son Dominic,
the mystical tree of the Holy Rosary:
grant that we may all embrace your holy devotion
and enjoy its true spirit;
so that those mystical roses
may be, upon our lips and in our hearts,
medicine for sinners
and an increase of grace for the just.
Amen.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel
O most holy and Immaculate Virgin,
beauty and splendor of Carmel!
You who look with eyes of special kindness

Strengthen my weakness with your power,
enlighten the darkness of my understanding with your wisdom,
increase in me faith, hope and charity.
Adorn my soul with such graces and virtues
that I may always be loved by your divine Son and by you.
Assist me in life, console me in death with your most loving presence,
and present me to the most august Trinity
as your devoted child and servant,
to praise you and bless you eternally in Paradise.
Amen.

a living faith, understanding to know and love him,
patience and grace to serve him and my brothers and sisters,
and one day to be united with you there in Heaven.
I ask you for my family, that it may live united in love;
for the conversion of sinners and the peace of the world;
and for children, that they may never lack divine assistance.
O my Mother, I know that you will hear me
and obtain for me these and whatever graces I ask of you,
for I ask them through the love you bear for your Son Jesus.

and freedom from all dangers.
In the last moments of my life, be my merciful helper,

I come before your holy image
to venerate you with filial devotion.
You, who were hidden in the walls of old Madrid,
reveal yourself today as Mother of immense tenderness.
Your name Almudena refers to the fortress:
give us firm constancy to live always secure in the faith of the Church.
Keep our love alive and strong,
that no obstacle may turn us from the path of salvation.
Teach us always to see you as Mother,
fountain of mercy, lap of forgiveness,
embrace of hope, gate of Glory.
Fill with your maternal presence the harsh loneliness of those who suffer.

Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

«Santina of Covadonga».
With your children of Asturias and of all Spain
I wish today to proclaim your glories and to join in your song:
You are the Handmaid of the Lord, our Mother and Queen!
As a pilgrim who longs to strengthen his hope,
I come to this shrine, witness to so much faith and love throughout history,
a secure home, under your shelter, among the mountains,
where you set your House and ceaselessly dispense the gifts of your Son.

through your family of redeemers:
by your ardent charity,
by your virginal womb

We pray that you would intercede for us

Marian hymns and canticles
Magnificat
The song of the Virgin Mary at the house of her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:46-55). The Church prays it every evening at Vespers.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty has done great things for me:
holy is his name,
and his mercy reaches his faithful
from age to age.
He has shown the strength of his arm:
he scatters the proud in their conceit,
he casts down the mighty from their thrones
and lifts up the lowly,
he fills the hungry with good things
and sends the rich away empty.
He comes to the help of Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy
—the promise he made to our fathers—
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Magnificat anima mea Dominum,
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo,
quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae.
Ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes,
quia fecit mihi magna, qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericordia eius a progenie in progenies
timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo,
dispersit superbos mente cordis sui;
deposuit potentes de sede
et exaltavit humiles;
esurientes implevit bonis
et divites dimisit inanes.
Suscepit Israel puerum suum,
recordatus misericordiae suae,
sicut locutus est ad patres nostros,
Abraham et semini eius in saecula.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
Ave Maris Stella
A most ancient hymn from the Vespers of the feasts of the Virgin.
Ave, maris stella,
Dei Mater alma,
atque semper Virgo,
felix caeli porta.
Sumens illud «Ave»
Gabrielis ore,
funda nos in pace,
mutans Hevae nomen.
Solve vincla reis,
profer lumen caecis,
mala nostra pelle,
bona cuncta posce.
Monstra te esse matrem,
sumat per te precem
qui pro nobis natus
tulit esse tuus.
Virgo singularis,
inter omnes mitis,
nos culpis solutos
mites fac et castos.
Vitam praesta puram,
iter para tutum,
ut videntes Iesum
semper collaetemur.
Sit laus Deo Patri,
summo Christo decus,
Spiritui Sancto
tribus honor unus. Amen.
Tota Pulchra es Maria
An ancient antiphon in honor of the Immaculate Conception.
Tota pulchra es, Maria,
et macula originalis non est in te.
Tu gloria Ierusalem,
tu laetitia Israel,
tu honorificentia populi nostri,
tu advocata peccatorum.
O Maria, o Maria,
Virgo prudentissima,
Mater clementissima,
ora pro nobis,
intercede pro nobis
ad Dominum Iesum Christum.
In English:
You are all beautiful, Mary,
and the original stain is not in you.
You are the glory of Jerusalem;
you are the joy of Israel;
you are the honor of our people;
you are the advocate of sinners.
O Mary, O Mary!
Virgin most prudent,
Mother most merciful,
pray for us,
intercede for us
before the Lord Jesus Christ.
Stabat Mater
A 13th-century sequence attributed to Jacopone da Todi. The Church sings it on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15) and during the Stations of the Cross.
Stabat Mater dolorosa
iuxta crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.
Cuius animam gementem,
contristatam et dolentem
pertransivit gladius.
O quam tristis et afflicta
fuit illa benedicta
Mater Unigeniti!
Quae maerebat et dolebat,
pia Mater, dum videbat
nati poenas incliti.
Quis est homo qui non fleret,
Matrem Christi si videret
in tanto supplicio?
Quis non posset contristari,
piam Matrem contemplari
dolentem cum Filio?
Pro peccatis suae gentis
vidit Iesum in tormentis
et flagellis subditum.
Vidit suum dulcem Natum
morientem desolatum,
dum emisit spiritum.
Eia, Mater, fons amoris,
me sentire vim doloris
fac, ut tecum lugeam.
Fac ut ardeat cor meum
in amando Christum Deum,
ut sibi complaceam.
Sancta Mater, istud agas,
Crucifixi fige plagas
cordi meo valide.
Tui Nati vulnerati,
tam dignati pro me pati,
poenas mecum divide.
Fac me tecum pie flere,
Crucifixo condolere,
donec ego vixero.
Iuxta crucem tecum stare
et me tibi sociare
in planctu desidero.
Virgo virginum praeclara,
mihi iam non sis amara:
fac me tecum plangere.
Fac ut portem Christi mortem,
passionis fac consortem
et plagas recolere.
Fac me plagis vulnerari,
fac me cruce inebriari
et cruore Filii.
Flammis ne urar succensus,
per te, Virgo, sim defensus
in die iudicii.
Christe, cum sit hinc exire,
da per Matrem me venire
ad palmam victoriae.
Quando corpus morietur,
fac ut animae donetur
paradisi gloria. Amen.
In English:
At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
while her Son was hanging there.
Through her soul, of joy bereaved,
bowed with anguish, deeply grieved,
now at length the sword had passed.
Oh, how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother highly blessed
of the sole-begotten One!
Christ above in torment hangs;
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.
Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ’s dear Mother to behold?
Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother’s pain untold?
For the sins of his own nation,
she beheld him hang in torment,
given over to the scourges.
She beheld her tender Child,
dying forsaken and desolate,
till he gave up his spirit.
O thou Mother, fount of love,
touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord.
Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord.
Holy Mother, pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified.
Let me share with thee his pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.
Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live.
By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.
Virgin of all virgins blest,
listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine.
Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.
Wounded with his every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned
in his very Blood away.
Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in that awful judgment day.
Christ, when thou shalt call me hence,
be thy Mother my defense,
be thy Cross my victory.
While my body here decays,
may my soul thy goodness praise,
safe in Paradise with thee. Amen.
O Sanctissima
A traditional Marian hymn, sung on the solemnities of the Virgin.
O sanctissima, o piissima,
dulcis Virgo Maria!
Mater amata, intemerata,
ora, ora pro nobis.
Tota pulchra es, o Maria,
et macula non est in te;
Mater amata, intemerata,
ora, ora pro nobis.
Sicut lilium inter spinas,
sic Maria inter filias;
Mater amata, intemerata,
ora, ora pro nobis.
In miseria, in angustia,
ora, Virgo, pro nobis;
pro nobis ora in mortis hora,
ora, ora pro nobis.
In English:
O most holy, O most loving,
sweet Virgin Mary!
Mother beloved, undefiled,
pray, pray for us.
You are all beautiful, O Mary,
and no stain is in you;
Mother beloved, undefiled,
pray, pray for us.
As a lily among thorns,
so is Mary among the daughters;
Mother beloved, undefiled,
pray, pray for us.
In misery, in distress,
pray, O Virgin, for us;
pray for us at the hour of death,
pray, pray for us.
Maria, Mater Gratiae
A short traditional prayer, much used at the end of the day.
Maria, Mater gratiae,
dulcis Parens clementiae,
tu nos ab hoste protege
et mortis hora suscipe.
Iesu, tibi sit gloria,
qui natus es de Virgine,
cum Patre et almo Spiritu,
in sempiterna saecula. Amen.
In English:
Mary, Mother of grace,
sweet Mother of mercy,
protect us from the enemy
and receive us at the hour of death.
Jesus, to you be glory,
who were born of the Virgin,
with the Father and the loving Spirit,
for the eternal ages. Amen.
Salve Mater Misericordiae
A Marian hymn of Carmelite tradition; the refrain is repeated after each stanza.
Refrain:
Salve, Mater misericordiae,
Mater Dei et Mater veniae,
Mater spei et Mater gratiae,
Mater plena sanctae laetitiae.
O Maria!
Salve, decus humani generis,
salve, Virgo dignior ceteris,
quae virgines omnes transgrederis
et altius sedes in superis.
O Maria!
Salve, felix Virgo puerpera:
nam qui sedet in Patris dextera,
caelum regens, terram et aethera,
intra tua se clausit viscera.
O Maria!
Esto, Mater, nostrum solatium;
nostrum esto, tu Virgo, gaudium;
et nos tandem post hoc exsilium
laetos iunge choris caelestium.
O Maria!
In English:
Refrain:
Hail, Mother of mercy,
Mother of God and Mother of pardon,
Mother of hope and Mother of grace,
Mother full of holy joy.
O Mary!
Hail, glory of the human race,
hail, Virgin worthier than all others,
who surpass all virgins
and are seated higher in the heavens.
O Mary!
Hail, blessed Virgin Mother:
for he who is seated at the right hand of the Father,
ruling heaven, earth and the skies,
enclosed himself within your womb.
O Mary!
Be, O Mother, our consolation;
be, O Virgin, our joy;
and at last, after this exile,
join us in gladness to the heavenly choirs.
O Mary!
