Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The little boats of the Mellieha grotto

In northern Malta, in the town of Mellieha, lies one of the island's oldest Marian shrines: a rock-cut sanctuary built around a grotto, on whose wall a fresco of the Virgin and Child is venerated. It is Our Lady of the Grotto of Mellieha, "Il-Madonna tal-Għar," the Madonna of the Grotto, to whom seafarers, in particular, have turned for centuries.
There are traditions that captivate even though they cannot be proven. Maltese legend tells that the icon in the grotto was painted by Saint Luke or one of his disciples in the 1st century, and that the grotto itself was consecrated by Saint Paul during his stay in Malta after the shipwreck of 60-61 AD. It is a venerable tradition, of medieval or Renaissance origin, which local scholars themselves present as a pious legend: there are no contemporary documents to prove it. It is also said that in times of danger—invasions, pirates—the icon was hidden or covered for protection, and even forgotten for centuries and then rediscovered; another devotional tradition without detailed documentary verification.
What is documented is both endearing and solid. The sanctuary of Mellieha is mentioned in medieval documents and clearly appears as a Marian shrine established at least since the 15th century. Under the Knights of the Order of St. John, between the 16th and 18th centuries, the church and grotto underwent renovations and protection, and votive offerings from sailors and the faithful dating back to the 16th century have been preserved. The current building, with its Baroque upper section, stands atop the ancient grotto.
And here is the most beautiful detail of this sanctuary: the marine votive offerings. Inside the grotto are preserved numerous model ships and tablets, testament to the graces that sailors saved from shipwrecks and the dangers of the sea attributed to the Virgin. Each little boat hanging there represents a life that returned home. Local devotion attributes many healings and protections to the Madonna of the grotto, especially those related to the sea and illness; sources speak of her reputation for miracles based on these votive offerings, although they do not offer lists of individual cases with critical documentation. There is also a record of papal favor—Pius IX granted indulgences—and that Saint John Paul II prayed before the image during his visit to Malta in 1990.
Regarding the Rosary, given that Mellieha is a very old Marian center and the Rosary is part of the usual Maltese piety, it is reasonable that it is prayed there; but in the historical and tourist sources consulted, no specific and documented link is mentioned - confraternity, apparition or miracle linked to its recitation - so there is no particular link beyond the general practice.
