Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"The Madonna dell'Arco: the irreverent player and the severed feet"
Near Naples, in Sant'Anastasia, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, the Madonna dell'Arco is venerated. The devotion centers on a fresco of the Virgin painted beneath the arch of an ancient aqueduct, from which the shrine derives its name. It is a sanctuary of deep popular piety, especially on Easter Monday, when the "fujenti," pilgrims who arrive in droves fulfilling their vows, come to the shrine.
Tradition recounts a dramatic episode linked to that Easter Monday. A young man was playing ball near the statue and, angered by a bad play, is said to have blasphemed and struck the image of Mary. As exemplary punishment for the desecration, his feet were cut off, and he remained as a warning. The story of the "piedi mozzati," the severed feet, has become one of the best-known tales of Neapolitan popular devotion.
Here, a clear distinction must be made. This story is transmitted with a strong exemplary tone, more characteristic of popular piety than critical historiography. Serious studies on the Madonna dell'Arco focus on the development of the cult in the 16th century, the miracles of healing, the founding of the sanctuary, and the abundance of votive offerings. There is no legal documentation (acts, judgments) available that would allow the gambler's episode to be described as a verified fact in all its details: it belongs to the hagiographic-popular tradition.
Regarding the Rosary, the spirituality of the shrine revolves primarily around Easter devotion, Easter Monday pilgrimages, and the promises of the faithful. Given the Rosary's popularity in southern Italy, it is very likely that it is prayed extensively there, but no specific foundational or charismatic link between the Madonna dell'Arco and the Rosary has been established.
