History of Marian devotion in Asturias

Asturias, known as the "Principality" and cradle of the Reconquist, has a Marian tradition that dates back to the dawn of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula. The devotion to the Virgin Mary is deeply rooted in the Asturian identity, manifesting itself in a rich network of sanctuaries, hermites and chapels that splash its mountains, valleys and coast. From the legendary apparition of the Virgin of Covadonga in the Holy Cave, which marks the beginning of the Reconquest in 722, to the numerous local advocates that live in each council, Asturias is a land marked by Mary's footprint.

The Asian Marian tradition is characterized by its connection with nature: the images appear in caves, oaks and fountains; the sanctuaries rise in mountains and hills; the romanias combine faith with the landscape. This communion between spirituality and territory has given rise to a devotional heritage of exceptional wealth, where each people has their own "Santina" to which it venerates with special devotion.

Covadonga, Acebo, Lugas, Contrucias, el Fresno, Alba, la Cave, Carbayu, Valdedios, la Guia, el Carmen... each advocation represents a face of the Mother of God that has manifested itself in the history and life of the Asturian people, accompanying him in his allegries and in his sorrows, in the work of the mine, in the work of the sea and in the work of the field.
