Marian Advocations of Austria

Austria, deeply Marian from the Habsburg, has its heart in Mariazell, la Magna Mater Austriae ("Grand Mother of Austria"), national sanctuary in Styria and the goal of pilgrims from all over Central Europe. Next to her they shine María Plain on Salzburg, Maria Taferl en el Danubio, la Virgin of Pötsch in the Cathedral of St. Stephen of Vienna, Maria Luggau in the Alps of Carinthia and the ancient Maria Saal. We collect them here by Länder.

The Rosary that liberated Austria (1947- 1955)

Perhaps no nation has experienced the power of the Rosary as astounding as Austria in the 20th century. After World War II, the country was occupied by the four allied powers; the east, with much of Vienna, under the control of the Soviet Red Army. The shadow of communism shone over the whole nation, and nothing made the Soviets think that they would ever leave.

In February 1947, the Franciscan Peter Pavlicek, marked by the message of Fatima and by an inner voice that he heard praying before the Magna Mater Austriae en Mariazell "Do as I say and there will be peace," he founded the Crusade of the Rosary of Expiation for World Peace (Rosary Atonement Crusade). His call was simple and bold: that the Austrians should pray the Rosary for the conversion of sinners, for the peace and freedom of Austria, conferring that cause entirely to the Virgin.

El day 13 of each month - the date of the apparitions of Fatima - from people to people and from city to city, the faithful went out to the streets in procession with her Marian images, praying the Rosary for hours. What began with a few became a cry from the whole nation: Father Pavlicek asked that at least one in ten Austrians - about 700,000 people - pray the Rosary daily, and by 1955 more than half a million were committed to doing so. Even the Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl He marched with a candle and a rosary in how many processions he could, accompanied by his government: "Even if only the two of us are there, I will go," he said, "my country demands it."

Then what no one expected happened. The 15 May 1955the Soviet Union signed the Austrian Treaty of State and agreed to withdraw its troops: only country from which the Red Army withdrew peacefully during the Cold War. The 26 October 1955 The last Soviet soldier came out and Austria regained its full freedom - a date that the country celebrates today as its National Day. The Austrians lived it as a gift of the Virgin and overflowed the streets of Vienna, with candles and rosaries, carrying in procession the image of Our Lady of Fatima in thanksgiving.

"Today, with a heart full of faith, we cry out to Heaven in joyful prayer: we are free. O Mary, we thank you!"

That is why, as you go through the Marian advocations of Austria, it is important to remember that each of these images - of Mariazell a María Plain, de Maria Taferl a la Virgin of Pötsch- was flown in those processions of the Rosary. Austria is a living witness that the Rosary, prayed by a whole people and with one voice, can change the course of history.
