Our Lady of Almudena

The Mother hidden in the wall

Our Lady of Almudena is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Madrid, venerated in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Almudena, next to the Royal Palace. Her name, of Arabic origin, evokes the ancient walled citadel upon which the old heart of Madrid stands. For centuries, the people of Madrid have cultivated a deep devotion to her image, a devotion to the Mother who, according to tradition, remained hidden and guarded within the city walls.

The story of the image hidden and reappeared on the wall is a Pious tradition transmitted for centuries, not a documented fact. Historians themselves warn that, on the dates that legend points out, there was still no wall to hide anything. On this page we always distinguish the tradition of historical data about the image and the cathedral.

History and tradition of the Almudena

The hidden image in the wall (tradition)

The most well-known tradition recounts that, around the year 712, faced with the imminent arrival of the Muslims, the inhabitants of Madrid walled up an image of the Virgin Mary within the city walls to protect it, leaving two lit candles beside it. Another pious version links the event to El Cid, to whom the Virgin Mary is said to have entrusted the capture of the fortress of Mayrit.

It must be emphasized that this is a matter of tradition, not documented history. Scholars point out that the first wall of Madrid was built by the Muslims in the 9th century, so no such wall would have existed in 712. According to historians, the most likely scenario is that the original image was carved in the Late Middle Ages for a main church in the town, which was called Santa María de la Almudena because it was located within the first walled enclosure.

The discovery

Traditional accounts place the rediscovery of the image in 1085, during the conquest of Madrid by King Alfonso VI of León. The story goes that, after days of prayer, as a procession passed through the Cuesta de la Vega, the section of the wall where the image had been hidden collapsed, revealing it intact, with the two candles still burning despite the centuries that had passed. These kinds of stories about hidden and found images were particularly prevalent in the 13th century.

Madrid's devotion

The image venerated today is a late Gothic sculpture, probably made between the 15th and 16th centuries, depicting Mary as queen holding the Child. It rests on a Baroque silver throne, a gift from the City of Madrid in 1640. It was canonically crowned on November 10, 1948. Over the centuries, the Almudena Cathedral has become the heart of Marian devotion for the people of Madrid, who honor their patron saint every November 9th.

The Almudena Cathedral

The current Cathedral of Santa María de la Almudena, built next to the Royal Palace, was dedicated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1993, becoming a fitting home for the image and a meeting place for the archdiocese. Alongside the statue is a 14th-century Gothic altarpiece, the work of Juan de Borgoña.

Patron Saint of Madrid

Our Lady of Almudena is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Madrid. Her name, linked to the idea of a citadel and fortress, has made her the symbol of a steadfast Mother in the midst of the great city: a serene refuge for those who live amidst the hustle and bustle, the rush, and the loneliness of large urban centers.

Spiritual message from Almudena

Devotion to the Almudena speaks today with simplicity:

🧱 Mary remains, even if she is hidden. Tradition keeps it on the wall: a Mother present even when we don't see her.
🕯️ The light doesn't go out. The lit candles that tell the legend are a sign of a faith that is sustained through time.
🏙️ Mary inhabits the city. It is in the old heart of Madrid, close to those who live between noise and haste.
✝️ Mary always leads her Son. He holds the Child with both hands: he offers it to us, he leads us to Him.

Prayer to Our Lady of Almudena

Our Lady and Mother,
I come to your Holy Image to venerate you with filial devotion.
In your honor this Cathedral was built,
that it might be a worthy dwelling place for you
and bright meeting place with all your children.
You, who were hidden in the walls of old Madrid,
You are now a Mother of immense tenderness.
Your name of Almudena refers to the fortress;
give us firm evidence to live always secure in the faith of the Church.
Keep our love alive and strong,
so that no obstacle can divert us from the path of salvation.
Teach us to see you always Mother, a source of mercy,
The lap of forgiveness, the embrace of hope, the door of glory.
It fills with your maternal presence the hard loneliness of those who suffer.
Love the wishes of your children.
Open our hearts to the joy of the spirit.
As an excellent Patrona of Madrid, he blesses and protects
to those who say every day, with devoted love,
Your holy name and your Son's name,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
